The Futureheads say Fuck You to record labels and...
Pitchfork is reporting that the next Futureheads album will be self-released. Bad idea? Maybe not. On one hand, I’m surprised more artists aren’t doing this. In this day and age of myspace and ease and availability of e-marketing, all it takes is one person in the band to have their shit together enough to know how to pull this off with some moderate level of success. The band has...

Sweet. American Apparel has come up with the totally original idea of combing thrift stores for crap no one wanted, marking it up 900%, and pairing it with their equally uninspired separates in a whole “new” store called “California Vintage.” That’s so awesome, Dov. SRSLY! I’m gonna get one the phone right now and call every hipster in Williamsburg - turns out...

To be young
There is a homeless girl wrapped in a blanket at my subway stop. This would be normal if I were in Manhattan, or she were over 50. But I’m in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Brooklyn and she appears to be very young. At the risk of sounding like a complete asshole, there aren’t homeless people on my neighborhood. Ever. My problem isn’t with her being there, or being homeless...

All I ever really needed to know about living in...
… I learned from Yelp? Apparently so. There’s a great thread on the NY Yelp message board right now with a ton of witty insight and useful suggestions pertaining to living here. I’ve taken the best (and truest) and added some of my own and condensed them all here: When you first move here you will get sick often. You quickly learn to wash your hands more often than ever before,...

This morning a construction worker was blown through a glass window and fell to his death in Clinton Hill. Seriously, people. That is really fucking windy. I’m not sure if anyone has actually ever been blown through a fucking closed and sealed glass window before.

I’d like to find some people who are interested in doing some political street art and make some big things happen. Namely, the Shepard Fairley propaganda has inspired me to do similarly styled things, but I’m trying to think on a larger scale.  I’d like to make a large stencil - 2 sheets wide by 3 sheets tall, totaling something like 14’ x 20’. At least six people...

Gag.
The Juno soundtrack is number one this week. I love it when Middle-America catches on to something thats been around for years. The Moldy Peaches are going to be like Green Day all over again.

Ork posters seems to be mostly restocked on the super-cool neighborhood posters which sold out so quickly over the holidays. They’ve also added a few new colors and cities to the arsenal, and while some are sold out, others say “coming soon,” but the majority of cities, colors, and styles they’ve done seem to be available. All are between $22 and $27, depending on if they...

If you’ve been up at night, unable to sleep because you are dying to know what ever happened to the guy who played “Robin” on the old TV show “Batman and Robin,” you can now rest soundly knowing that he and his wife run an incredible dog rescue in California, which also happens to be home to the worlds largest dog:   Avalanche the Great Dane is SEVEN FOOT THREE on his...

Researchers in Australia are working on a radio controlled contraceptive implant for men which could turn the flow of sperm on and off via remote-control. Sweet. I think it’s great that scientists are looking into birth control from a male angle. But when do you think the remote control for boners will be invented? Thats the one I’m waiting on. Also, good news if you’re trying to...

It’s been a few weeks since the girls of Jezebel posted video of themselves trying on various ridiculously unflattering unitards and things of the gold-legging variety at a local American Apparel store. The point was to show what some of the AA clothes on the mannequins look like on real people, and they made the point well (if you have not seen the video it is really great and you should...

I was just talking about this with a friend in the office. Its like we fucking know the ship is going down, and its going down fast. So it seems like everyone in the office’s drive to work has greatly decreased. Because if we’ll all be jobless soon anyway, then whats the point? I’m fully capable and willing to throw my heart and soul into working on a new project, but why should...

Guilty Pleasures
Anyone who’s ever been to a suburban American mall is probably familiar with the store Hot Topic. Its like retarded goth kid central, and most people try to avoid it at all costs (what, you’re not in the market for a black wide-leg pair of bondage-pants?). Not surprisingly, NYC has not embraced the concept of mall-goth yet, so the city is devoid of Hot Topic fun. The thing is, if you...

Crunch, NYSC, YMCA, or bust.
Even though it hasn’t (and probably never will) snowed here it’s still been cold enough to warrant an excessive amount of “laying around and watching movies” time. I think most of my friends here have weekly, if not daily, dates with Gym, and I’ve been seriously considering it myself. Until this morning … 8:50 - 2 flights downstairs to prepare lunch 8:55 - 2...

I love big dogs. The more ridiculous and oversized and bear-like they are, the better. I had a great dane who was the love of my life, but I had to give her up for my old job which put me on the road for 6 months. She’s much better off now, in a home in jersey with a yard, and she gets to go to doggie camp all the time. I miss her more and more every day, but I know she has a good home now...

Tumblr Question
Does anyone know why photos that call out to an html from inside a post don’t show up when reading posts through the Dashboard, but photos posted specifically under the photo tag do? Is there a way to change this?

More LOC fun:
Doing a search for “woman” in the Library of Congress Flickr page has some gorgeous photos of women from the 30s and 40s: I’ll take 3 yards of this fabric, thanks. You almost never see women from the 40s wearing jeans, even in all of these photos of working women this is one of the only examples I could find. But even though she’s slumming it with the (cuffed!) denim,...

3 days ago I discovered last.fm. Today I discovered PostSecret. I am a music junkie working in the music industry, and the owner of a blog asking people to send anonymous stuff in - you’d think I would have checked out one of these sites by now, no? It’s like I’ve been living under a giant laptop-shaped rock.

I'm in love.
Next time I am in Portland I am definitely staying at the Ace Hotel, which apparently has records and record players in at least a few rooms (photo above) and may also be the hippest and most modern place to stay in America. According to their website (which is one of the best and more useable designs I’ve ever come across), they have a business lounge with 2 Macbooks for your use, free...

Remember all that talk I did about a month ago about how I was going to start all those sewing projects? Well I’m full of shit. I haven’t even gotten my machine serviced yet. I  spent over $50 on various fabrics at Mood, and have done nothing with them.  It’s just intimidating for me for some reason to start a sewing project. I have yards of these beautiful fabrics and I’m...

All this talk of goals . . .
I’m going to try and talk my parents out of some frequent flyer miles for my birthday in September. They have a ton of them - my dad owns a company and charges all of the huge company expenses to a card which earns flight miles for every dollar spent. This has been going on for about 15 years but they rarely seem to do anything with them so I think it would stand to reason that they would...
